Halloween is just around the corner! By now, you should be seeing all kinds of spooky decorations in your neighborhood.

One of the spookiest things about Halloween is when you don’t have a costume ready for your little one and the big day is almost here. The best Halloween costumes are ones that people put effort into and ones that you can involve your kids in while making them.

With that in mind, here is a quick and easy tutorial to make a building block Halloween costume for a boy or girl. It is courtesy of Tara Dennis with Better Homes and Gardens.

What you’ll need:

  • A measuring tape
  • A cardboard box that fits your child
  • A small cardboard box
  • Packing tape
  • A roll of vinyl contact paper in the color of your choice
  • Eight disposable cups the same color as the vinyl
  • A cap that is either the same color as the vinyl and/or black
  • Hot glue gun
  • A crafting knife
  • A sewing needle
  • A plate and bowl

Step 1

Take your measuring tape and measure your child from the shoulder to the thigh. Get a box that is the correct size and trim off any excess if you need to.

 Step 2

Tape the box closed, leaving one end open. The open end will be the bottom of the costume. Trim off any excess if you need to or tape flaps together at the corners.

Step 3

Cover the box with the vinyl contact paper, doing one side at a time.

 Step 4

Take a needle and pop any air bubbles you get and smooth them down.

 Step 5

Take a dinner plate and outline a circle on the top of the box and then cut it out. This will be the head hole. Take a bowl and outline circles on both sides close to the top and then cut them out. These will be the arm holes.

Step 6

Arrange the cups on the front of the costume so you have two vertical rows of three. Hot glue the cups in place.

Step 7

Repeat the process with the small box. With this box, you will want to tape it completely closed, cover it with the vinyl and then cut out a hole in the bottom and then glue two cups to the top.

Put the box onto the cap (it should fit by itself, but you can glue it if you want).

We all know building blocks are a fantastic way to help your child’s development. Just imagine how good they will help when your child actually becomes a building block! It’ll be like development through osmosis!

Have a great Halloween, everyone!
