How to Make Easy and Fun Tensile Bubbles at Home

Click-A-Brick learning toy for boys and girls

Bubbles are great, aren’t they?

They float, they ripple, they bounce and then they pop!

But, not all bubbles are the same. The bubbles many of us are used to are the round bubbles, and those are fantastic, but do you know what tensile bubbles are?

They’re bubbles that are created by tension. Basically, they’re bubbles created by being stretched between surfaces. Today, we're going to learn how to build structures that you can use to create tensile bubbles thanks to the Babble Dabble Do channel on YouTube.

You can make tensile bubbles at home using just three things:

  • Straws
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Bubble solution

Step 1

Gather enough straws to make either a cube or a pyramid. They will all need to be equal length. Straws of about three or four inches will make good structures.

To make a cube, you’ll need twelve straws.

To make a pyramid, you’ll need six straws.

(You can also try to make your own shapes, if you like.)

Step 2

Make your structures.

To build a cube, make two squares out of pipe cleaners and straws. You can pass the pipe cleaner through the straws and bend the pipe cleaner where the straws meet. Use as many pipe cleaners as you need, twisting them together when you need to connect them and cutting them down if you need to.

Next, connect your two squares together with pipe cleaners and straws at the four corners of each square. This will give you a cube.

To build a pyramid, make a triangle out of pipe cleaners and straws and then connect straws to each corner of the triangle and then connect those three straws at the top. This will give you a pyramid. If you want a pyramid like the ones in Egypt, you can make a square with pipe cleaners and straws and connect more pipe cleaners and straws at the four corners and then connect them together at the top.

Connect another pipe cleaner to your structure so you can dip them.

Make your bubbles! Dip your structure into your bubble solution and watch the tensile bubbles form. They’re strong, you can blow through them to make even bigger bubbles and you can swing them to make big, long bubbles!

Tensile bubbles are super fun to make and play with. Try them today.
