Learn How to Make Nature Paintbrushes

Autumn leaves are to art as pumpkins are to Halloween: the perfect seasonal craft activity for kids. Nature is bursting with color this time of year so creating your own paintbrushes from all that natural bounty will be a fun, easy (and a little messy) sensory activity to do as a family.

So today, we are going to look at how to make these natural paintbrushes for some fun, hands-on learning experience. Get some string and scissors and get crafting!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Twigs or stick (one for each paint brush)
  • Variety of leaves, flowers and
  • String (or elastic bands)
  • Paint
  • Large roll of paper or cardboard
  • Scissors

STEP 1

Collecting all the nature elements for this activity is part of the fun, so go on a nature walk or explore your own backyard and collect a variety of twigs, sticks, textured plants and leaves.

STEP 2.

Lay out all your nature elements and arrange them together in groups, selecting which plants/leaves go with which stick. Attach the leaves or plants to the stick using a string (or an elastic band). Some elements may be fragile, so make sure that your string/elastic band is not too tight.

STEP 3.

Take a colorful selection of paints, a large paper or cardboard and your new nature paintbrushes and get your colorful paint mess on. Experiment with all the brushes to see what cool marks they can make!

When you’re finished making this colorful nature craft, collect your Click-A-Bricks and see what nature-inspired stuff you can make with them.
