Toy Company Founders Praise LEGO’s Decision To Invest in Sustainable Materials

The LEGO Group has established the LEGO Sustainable Materials Centre. It will be established at the their headquarters in Billund, Denmark during 2015 and 2016. This new endeavour whose mission is to produce more renewable energy than it consumes. It also aims to change current materials of building elements to more sustainable alternatives. This decision was taken at the General Assembly of the company in May 2015.

The Co-Founder of Click-A-Brick, Jason Smith, approves of the venture. “This is a milestone,” Smith said. “I think that because they are a leader in the industry, other companies will follow in LEGO’s footsteps. Their investment will motivate them to worry about building a better tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of their commitment. At Click-A-Brick, we hope it inspires children, as they will be the ones to build and play in that tomorrow.”

Several factors influence the environmental sustainability of a material: the source, the chemical composition of the material, its use, and the end of its shelf life. The LEGO created the Sustainable Materials Centre in order to find and implement new sustainable alternatives to current raw materials. They expect to recruit over 100 employees towards this objective.

This investment continues the LEGO group’s commitment to sustainability. The group first announced their ambition to find and implement sustainable alternatives in 2012. The LEGO Group and World Wildlife Fund signed the Climate Savers in 2013 with a new collaboration in spring 2015 to focuses on assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of bio-based materials for LEGO elements and packaging.

The group invested in an offshore wind farm in 2013 which aims to produce the energy equivalent to 320,000 households. It introduced Forest Stewardship Council certified packaging in 2014. This reduced CO2 emissions by 10,000 tonnes.

The further expectations of the LEGO Sustainable Materials Centre is to collaborate and develop partnerships with stakeholders and experts. The Group has collaborated with companies and experts on this task. They aim to reduce their environmental footprint to leave a positive impact on the planet.

Georg de Gorostiza, the Co-Founder of Click-A-Brick, endorses LEGO’s decision. “I think their announcement is a testament to their objective to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow. I know that I’m worried about the type of world that my children will inherit. We need to be preoccupied about the environment and new generations. The LEGO group’s decision is a long-term investment towards that future. It proves their dedication to the research and development of new materials, something that we would love to incorporate into our own toy lines. I realize it’s a daunting challenge but if anybody is up to it, it’s definitely LEGO.”
